After seeing the magnificent Valley of Fire, I wasn't sure if Red Rocks Canyon could even impress me. But it turns out that I love red sandstone in all its forms and locations.

Red Rocks Canyon is right in the backyard of Las Vegas. You go from neighborhoods and shopping centers to an incredible variety of vibrant mountain peaks within a few short miles. The transition is striking.

My favorite mountain had a preppy, nautical stripe across the top that made it look all bold and JCrew. Just like a V-neck sweater from the '90s.

We took the 13-mile scenic drive and stopped at viewpoints, choosing a few hikes among the plentiful trailheads. You can often see across the canyon from wherever you are, offering incredible views in every direction
We spent the most time on the Calico Tanks trail, a fun scramble up a canyon and across sandstone of every color. We made it almost to the trail's end, until we found ourselves hoisting the corgis up the hill more often than they could walk on their own. Finally, we decided to give ourselves and the dogs a break and head back down.

My favorite things about Red Rocks Canyon ...
Super pet and bike-friendly, with dogs allowed on all trails and a one-way road filled with beautiful views.
SO close to Las Vegas. I can't believe that we ever went to the city without taking a day away from the bustle in this beautiful area.
Apparently, there are actual dinosaur tracks here. We didn't see them, but I did read about it. :)
You can see layers of history in the rocks, with older limestone sitting atop colorful sandstone, as part of the Keystone Thrust Fault. While the fault runs all the way to Canada, Red Rocks Canyon is one of the best places to see the geologic history it reveals.
The Canyon gave us a whole new red rocks landscape to love, with gorgeous features and colors.

What to know if you plan to visit
You will need a timed-entry reservation to take the scenic drive, which pretty much means you will need this to see the area at all. However, if you head in before 7 a.m., reservations are not required and you will have the place mostly to yourself!
If you plan to check out the visitor center, make this your first stop. Since the drive is one-way, you won't pass by it again!
Plan to go for at least one hike to see the area up close. We loved the Calico Tanks Trail! Bring lots of water and sun protection!
Desert tortoises sometimes rest under parked cars, so keep your eye out (there are many signs to remind you). We didn't see any, but we were there in the winter when they aren't active.
